Senior Data Engineer
This is an AI and retrieval-platform role. You'll own the data and retrieval backbone that turns clinical and sensor signals into the next best care action: the data layer and the retrieval and embedding pipelines behind Vera, plus the ingestion that brings device data in today. From there you'll drive the build-out into EHR data and risk modeling next. You'll work directly with our founding engineer in a HIPAA-aligned environment where data quality is a clinical responsibility.
Elevare is the clinical AI infrastructure for maternal health, extending care before intake, between OB visits, and after discharge, from pre-conception through one year postpartum. We pair an agentic AI orchestrator with Vera, a multilingual virtual clinician, and a clinician-on-the-loop model, built on ACOG, AWHONN, and HEDIS protocol alignment and integrated with Epic and Cerner over FHIR.
- Own the data layer behind our AI: schema, modeling, and query design, including the longitudinal patient state Vera reasons over.
- Own Vera's retrieval pipeline: search and retrieval over a clinical knowledge corpus, tuned for quality and safety on medical content.
- Run the embedding pipeline that keeps that corpus fresh and correct.
- Own ingestion of device data: wearable signals (Apple Health) flowing into clean, queryable, deduplicated datasets that feed routing and risk workflows.
- Make data quality, lineage, and observability first-class, so clinical decisions rest on trustworthy data, with the traceability to explain any decision Vera made.
- Treat PHI handling, auditability, consent-gating, and security as first-class in a HIPAA-aligned cloud environment.
- On the roadmap: expand wearable ingestion beyond Apple Health, pulling additional device and sensor sources into the same clean datasets.
- Build EHR ingestion over FHIR / SMART on FHIR (Epic, Cerner), moving clinical data into clean datasets alongside our device and in-app signals.
- Build feature pipelines and models for early risk, like pregnancy phenotyping and signatures of preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, extending today's rules-based risk signals toward learned models.
- Scale the platform as data volume grows.
- 5+ years in data / backend / ML engineering, building and operating production data systems.
- Strong in Python and SQL, comfortable owning schema, modeling, and query performance.
- Hands-on with retrieval / RAG and embeddings, or a strong track record you can clearly bring to it.
- Comfortable owning cloud infrastructure end to end, with real opinions on reliability and cost.
- AI-native: you use AI tools daily and know where they help and where they don't.
- High ownership, comfortable with ambiguity and ground-floor building; you set patterns rather than wait for them.
- Healthcare data, FHIR, HL7, or HIPAA experience a strong plus; ML feature pipelines, wearables, or real-time data a plus.
